Frog Meadow Guard Station Cabin
NOTE:
Tulare County was not able to determine an address for this
station since it so far from any county road.
The historic Frog Meadow Guard Station offers a step back
in time, with all of the comforts of home prior to the
invention of electricity! The guard station was built in the
early 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCCs) to
provide a residence for Forest Service fire patrolmen
stationed in the area. It is located in the Sequoia National
Forest at the 7,760 elevation. The cabin is available from
June through October, depending on weather.
The cabin is an ideal site if you are looking for
solitude, and is also great for stock use, mountain biking,
hunting, hiking and more. The sky is so clear at Frog Meadow
that bringing a telescope for star gazing is a real treat.
Nearby Tobias Lookout has incredible views of the
surrounding area and is staffed during the summer season.
The cabin does not have electricity. The stove,
refrigerator, heater and hot water heater operate on
propane. The cabin has one bedroom with two double beds and
a rollaway bed; the living room has two futon couches, a
folding dining table, chairs and a desk. The cabin sleeps 9,
but there is room outside the cabin for tents. The total
occupancy limit is 10. The fully equipped kitchen has a
propane stove and refrigerator, table and chairs, pots and
pans, dishes, glasses and utensils. The bathroom includes a
flush toilet, sink and a tub-shower. Outside the cabin are a
picnic table and a campfire ring.
Cabin guests should plan to bring flashlights and/or
lanterns for lighting; sleeping bags or bedding and pillows,
bath towels and personal items. There are no condiments or
food items provided, so guests should plan to bring all
their supplies. The nearest store is 2 hours away, in
Porterville, Ducor, Bakersfield or Kernville. Suggested
additional items include toilet paper, paper towels, camp
chairs for outside, insect repellent, dish towels, and a
camera!
The Frog Meadow Cabin is definitely far from the madding
crowd! If you are seeking an off-the beaten path experience
– it will be well worth the effort that it takes to get to
the cabin. For additional friends and family members who may
want to come along, Frog Meadow Campground is ¼ mile away.
There are 10 sites that are on a first come – first served
basis.
